In the 1920s, Santos' mascot was a fish
History of Henrique C. - Viseu, Portugal
In the 1920s, Santos' mascot was a fish, inspired by the nickname the team had already earned after being teased by opponents. Because it was very fragile, in the 1950s, the animal was replaced by the whale by the cartoonist Messias de Melo, from the newspaper Gazeta Esportiva. The representation of the team as an orca pleased the fans. In 2006, the team launched the two mascots used until today: Baleião and Baleinha.
